I am still laughing over these comments from my students. When I have the classes lined up and ready, but their teacher is not there yet, I will ask them general questions (ex. 2 times 5 times 3? Or What part of the plant is underground? Or What is the capital of France?) I asked a second grade class, "What is the capital of California?" Every hand went up fast. The student I called on answered, "C, the capital of California is C." It took me a minute to understand she was talking about the capital letter. Another second grade class asked me what I meant when I asked them to answer in unison. So I did a quick prefix lesson on uni- and asked what a unicorn was. "A unicorn is the stuff that squirrels hunt for to not starve over winter." He answered. "Oh, I think you are thinking about an acorn." I gently corrected. "Yeah, it is. You know 'a' and 'u', they are both vowels." He replied, with all of the class nodding in agreement. The final story - Two middle school girls came in at lunch and were talking about a book they HAD to read in class. The first was complaining a lot and the other was trying to change the subject. When the first left for the bathroom, the second girl and I chatted. I asked her if the book was "that bad" and she said no, not really. "Jane is just like that. She is a 'the book still has half to go' kind of girl and I am more a 'the book's half finished' kind of girl." I love working with kids.
