Good Morning, All!

Thanks for the responses I received. The key words seem to be "Altered Art." I
have some direction now - and will be deciding what to do soon. Many asked for the
origami site I found. It's on the DIY Network homepage - under Book Origami,
should this link not work.

Here are some of your suggestions:

Try the public library for books on altered art...using discarded books

as the foundation for a creative venture. Our art teachers use this as

an art project that students really enjoyed.

Collages of the pictures and words in the book?

Author bios on a mural timeline?

Pinwheels?

Ransom letters from the words to the book characters?

Font comparison contest?

One idea I saw this fall at my son's high school banquet that I thought was a
good idea: Stacks of 2 or 3 old books were completely spray-painted either
metallic silver or metallic gold and then tied with a big ribbon of the same color
- it made lovely centerpieces at an honor's student awards banquet!

Check out http://www.thisintothat.com/ - for ideas on how to make book shelves
from old books..

There have been other postings on this subject in the past on LM_Net so maybe you
could do a search in the archives. I remember a website where someone built a
sculpture out of old books - it looked cool...

If you do a Google search on "altered books", you can find many sites

like this, which are fun to ponder: http://www.alteredbookartists.com/

In the high school an art teacher used to take our old hardcover books

and decoupage them. You could try something like that using pages from

within the book itself or using things that describe or illustrate the

book. The books always looked great when done and some students got
  very creative.

Altered books are very popular now. Also, some people cut out a 'box' inside to
hold secret things - like a mini safe! The cutting might be dangerous for the
little children, though. People also cut out words to make poems, card messages,
collages, etc. Also some people use the hard covers for collage backs instead of
canvas. And they take out the insides & just use the covers to make new journals &
add paper or they leave some

pages & cover them for the journals. The only problem with all this is that it
might give them the idea that cutting, painting, etc. are okay! Maybe you could see
if there's an artsy-craftsy group around that might like some. Also high school
art teachers might like some. Another thought, if any have good illustrations,
those are popular too. If any of them are the old time illustrators, you can
probably find people who'd LOVE them.

  Thanks for the responses!
  HG
