At the moment that we persuade a child, any child, to cross that threshold,
that magic threshold into a library, we change their lives forever, for the
better. ~~Barack Obama

You see, I don't believe libraries should be drab places where people sit in
silence, and that's been the main reason for our policy of employing wild
animals as librarians. ~~Monty Python

I have a teacher who has tried to scan her doc and then type into them with out
success. She wants to know what other software, web sites, ect she could use to be
able to type into her doc's once she scans them. She does not want to recreate
them herself.

*---
I am not sure about other software, etc, but the all in one I use has an option in
software to send to Word where you can edit. Have her check on that as an option.
*---
This is the question I asked when I bought my scanner. I don't know if it has been
used for that yet, but my scanner came with a CD that downloads something to allow
this ability. I have the HP Scanjet 4890.
*---
She needs to make sure that when she scans she is using an OCR (Optical Character
Recognition) option. Otherwise, it is being scanned as an image rather than a
document. Once she has scanned with OCR she can move (export) the scanned image to
a word processing program (MS
Word) and make changes. It works best with a clean copy, i.e. no handwriting or
other markings, because the software tries to make sense of these markings.
*---
I don't know of any fancy software, but you can add text boxes over the area she
would like to type or write in. Please let me know if someone offers a software or
other suggestion.
*---
If you are just going to scan them and not wanting to purchase anything. I use
textboxes! Kind of tedious, but works.
*---
Use the arrow keys to nudge the boxes so the text is right where you want. If that
isn't "fine" enough, hold down the control key and then the arrows to nudge them
perfectly.
*---
She should re-scan the text but select OCR (optical character recognition) before
she does.
Virtually any scanner will have OCR available.
*---
I don't know what scanner she has but she needs to check her settings. There are
some programs such as Adobe that will do this but most scanners have an OCR setting
or a save to text. However, even with this the quality of the scan depends on how
the scanner interperets the type and reimages it.
*---
You probably need a scanner with OCR technology (Optical Character
Recognition) Unfortunately, it seems to be exceedingly complicated, and just as
rare. I have yet to find a relatively inexpecisve scanner that has it that's easy
to use. I bought an HP color fax/sca/copier a couple years ago, and insisted I find
one with OCR. Well, the the sales people didn't know what I was talking about; the
tags or boxes mentioned it, but didn't go into detail. When I got this thing to
school, I downloaded the directions for OCR and there were 90 pages, and I couldn't
understand them. I don't know anyone at my school who is familiar with the
technology. Ten years ago I was at a school that got a brand new scanner with it,
but the OCR part was a trial and only lasted 90 days. I did one project on it and
then it evaporated. I can't believe lots of people don't want this! Let us know
if you find anything good!
