The best substitute for reading classics is to listen to them. Instead of purchasing abridged versions of difficult literature, why not purchase or rent some form of Audio Book? The problem with abridged and adapted versions of classics is that you only get the storyline - you lose the rich texture of language and literary beauty that makes the work a "classic" to begin with. A work is considered "literature" because of the quality of writing as well as the storyline. If you just want to expose the student to the "story", in order to discuss theme, etc. why not just rent the movie? Sharon Slaney, Librarian Timberlake H.S. Library 5973 W. Hwy 54 P.O.
