I just finished this with my 4th graders, and found these books helpful: The Napping House by Audrey Wood If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff The End by David LaRochelle 17 Things I'm Not Allowed to Do Anymore by Jenny Offill There is a unique book out titled, "The End" by David Rochelle. It is told backwards and each page ends with the word "because...." The 4th grade teacher in my buiding uses the Amelia Bedelia books for this purpose. Hope this helps. I just used "Elbert's Bad Word" by Audrey Wood yesterday. It worked well. The Day Jimmy's Boa Ate the Wash Meanwhile, back at the Ranch Any of Laura Numeroff's books That's what you get! Cloudy with a chance of meatballs The day Jimmy's boa ate the wash The rain came down The great gracie chase: Stop that dog! Numeroff, Laura 1985-If You Give a Mouse a Cookie 574.5 Pfe- A Log's Life 1997 I do a really fun cause & effect lesson with the book Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. I read the book outloud. I then have clouds with the words: because, so, since, therefore, & as a result of. I hand those clouds out to 5 different kids. Then I have sentence cut out for example: The family realized that a pancake had landed on Henry's face. The family laughed. I make about 15 cause & effect sentences taken right from the story. I pass out the two sentences that correspond to 2 different kids. Then I have the sorresponding cloud word decide where to stand. For example The family realized that a pancake had landed on Henry's face SO the family laughed. Then I talk about how you could reverse the sentece order & what cloud would it be As A Result of... It's a great cause & effect lesson & also a good lesson for creative writing because it gives them alternatives to so & because! FORTUNATELY by Remy Charlip is excellent for cause and effect. There is also a chapter in THE TALE OF DESPERAUX that addresses cause and effect directly in the narrative. My favorite - Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears by Verna Aardema. Joanne Proctor, retired I am a librarian at a K-4 school. One of our fourth grade teachers uses the Amelia Bedelia books to demonstrate cause and effect. She also has the students work in groups to write their own cause and effect stories. Hope this helps. How about "The Day Jimmy's Boa Ate the Wash" for cause and effect? Birdseye, Tom. A regular flood of mishap. 1st ed. New York : Holiday House, c1994.
