I agree on the 'protest' idea, however, I think we need also go on The Today Show
website
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032633/ and actively participate in their 'allDAY'
blog or go into the book section and enter discussion there. Let them know we're
unhappy.

I love being able to go into NPR's site and listening to an interview I missed.
It would be great to be able to do the same for an author interview I could not
watch (either on TV or videocast) due to my schedule.

So, even if we do start posting video interviews or a video of the award winners'
speeches, we also need to let those in charge of the news programs know that we'd
actually like to hear the author and/or illustrator speak for themselves.

I agree with Judy. I think we should protest this by doing much better
videointerviews with those 3 (Brian, Laura Amy, and Lorriene) and push it through
youtube/teachertube and more through the power of web 2.0. The reporter did
children's literature a disservice. I was irritated by her rushing through HER
commentary, repeating "In other words", and talking over the guests. I was reading
Betsy Bird's description of the Awards and this video on her blog
http://www.schoollibraryjournal.com/blog/1790000379/post/1960020196.html and noted
how many other people were frustrated with the interview on TODAY.

Perhaps we should be contacting the members of ALA's e-Participation TaskForce to
encourage them to make a video of the author speeches during Annual live webcasts
so everyone can truly HEAR the authors in their own words. If you can't be there to
hear the speeches, you are missing one of the best parts. Can't wait to cheer these
on at Annual in Annaheim, CA.

So I just watched Brian Selznick and Laura Amy Schlitz being
interviewed on
the Today Show from this past Tuesday, and it was one scary scene. The
interviewer, Ann Curry, barely let them get a word in; she called Laura
Amy by the
name of Laura Ann and said she was a teacher, not a librarian; and
asked them
both the world's dumbest questions which she then proceeded to answer
herself.
What a shame--I'd've given anything to have heard what they had to say.
On the
plus side, Curry was enthusiastic and appeared to have read at least a
summary
of the books. But what a wasted opportunity. Check it out--

Guess we'll just need to wait for the Newbery-Caldecott speeches at
ALA.
