I know I mentioned to a couple of people I would be posting a HIT on Friday afternoon; obviously that didn't happen, but here it is now: My original question was about how to catalog magazines in a way so that the title of the magazine, the call number, and the issue date would all show up on the barcode, without putting the date in the call number. Well, it turns out there isn't a way to do precisely what I wanted; however, I had a good number of responses that all suggested ways of putting the date in the call number in a way that makes more sense and is more organized than what we were doing before, so I am happy to say I think I've found what will work for us. Here is what most people suggested in one way or another, which is what we are going to do: Create a title in Destiny for each magazine for the current school year, such as "American Girl 2007-2008." Within each title, add copies for each issue of the magazine that will be received throughout the school year. (Mark each copy as "on order" until it comes in, and then switch to "available.") For call number, we'll be using MAG, an abbreviation for the magazine title, and the date (month and year). Then, as years go by and we want to delete back issues from say, four years ago, we'll be able to simply delete the titles for those years. The exception to this pattern will be for Zoobooks and Kids Discover. Because these magazines are devoted to a particular topic each month, each issue will have its own title, which will include the topic, such as Zoobooks: Whales. This way, those magazines will show up in a catalog search for the topic. (Whereas if it was just "Zoobooks 2007-2008," the catalog would not be able to find them, as subject headings in Destiny can only be added to the TITLE, not individual COPIES.) This will mean a bit more work than for the other magazines, but I think it's worth it to have those resources come up in the catalog for students doing research or searching out of interest. I know to many people this sounds like a lot more work than necessary, but I think it will work best for us. To each his/her own! Thanks to everyone who responded and helped me figure this out. I appreciate it very much (and so does my aide, who was getting tired of magazines piling up without proper cataloging and processing)!
