Janet et al,
Shipping costs are usually prohibitive. The village in which I set up the library,
was up in the rocky central part of South Africa. It was away from the coast and
away from any major towns. Even though South Africa is one of the best of the
African nations it is still a third world country. When I wanted to go to a
different village that was 30 miles away it took me 75 miles to get there because
the only road was back to Pretoria and then from Pretoria to the other town. The
roads were full of ruts. We had no electricity, no running water, no modern
conveniences...I did have electricity in the home I stayed, but the woman prepaid
the electric and put in a card to make it run. You could actually see the meter
(inside the house) and watch the Rand ($) slipping away as you used the hot plate
(no stove, no refrigerator, no oven). We turned the meter on and ran out of doors
to the drilled well and turned on the pump for the water which we proceeded to put
the big hose into a big barrel and fill it up...when we needed water we went out to
the barrel with a bucket and dipped out the water we needed. They put me up in
that house because that was the wealthy house in the village.

So unless you plan to send directly to the school or library and know the address
of that place those schools and libraries are unable to pick up those books from
the ports or from the warehouses where aid is sent.

Subject: Re: Discarded books

Question I've been reading this thread with interest. While I totally agree that
many, many books are ready for the scrap heap, I've wondered about picture books,
and even some novels. If picture books and novels are in good condition, even
though they are old and no longer viable in my library, why wouldn't they be good
donations to places that have no books? Most of them are "just stories" anyway,
and could open up worlds to people that don't have any. I think for someone who
has no book at all, some of these would be wonderful. Just a thought.Janet Perry,
