Hugo Cabret fans: I'm so thrilled for Brian Selznick, New Jersey guy (from East Brunswick--the guy who own the car service I take to the airport is thrilled, too--he used to work with Brian's dad. It's a small town, New Jersey). There's a wonderful article about him in the NYTimes Arts section today, with a color photo of him in his Brooklyn studio and a picture of the book. I especially love the quote about how his editors helped him boil down his sentences: Mr. Selznick said he still needed help from Ms. Mack and another editor, Leslie Budnick, to prune the remaining prose. Because he tended to think in pictures, he just described what he saw in his head. He gave an example: “Hugo turned to the old man and the old man looked at Hugo and Hugo looked up and said ‘Give me back my notebook’ and the old man put his hand on his hips and said ‘I’m not going to give you back your notebook’ and Hugo got really mad and spit on the ground.” The editors’ suggestion: “Give me back my notebook.” “No.” “And suddenly,” Mr. Selznick said, “it was a scene.” For the whole article, go to: www.nytimes.com/2008/01/26/books/26selznick.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=brian+selznick& st=nyt&oref=slogin Judy Freeman Children's Literature Consultant "Wild About Books" columnist School Library Media Activities Monthly Author of Books Kids Will Sit Still For 3 (Libraries Unlimited, 2006; www.LU.com) and the brand new Once Upon a Time!: Using Storytelling, Creative Drama, and Reader's Theater with Children in Grades K-6 (2007) 65 North Sixth Avenue Highland Park, NJ 08904 732-572-5634 / BKWSSF@aol.com www.JudyReadsBooks.com ************** Biggest Grammy Award surprises of all time on AOL Music.
