This topic came up on Pubyac last year and many public librarians were
quite upset as well. Generally, they are gearing up for summer reading,
taking vacation before the crowds hit as well as paying visits to
schools to promote summer reading. May is not a good time for them
either, so I am not sure how it was decided that CBW would be more
effective in May instead of November.

Subject: Childrens' Book Week

Moving Childrens' Book Week to May means that many of us will probably
not be able to celebrate now. Many schools across the country finish a
school year in mid-late May and there are just too many things going on
during those last couple of weeks to
try to celebrate CBW. We have Read Across America in March, National
Library Week in April, plus National Poetry Month in April. It just
seems like overkill to then have CBW in May. My theory is that it was
changed with public libraries in mind. They
have their summer reading program kickoff in early June and this helps
them build up support and excitement for that. Unfortunately, I think
it is now going to go by the wayside at a lot of school libraries.
