My husband remembers a required reading assignment of a short story in high school,
but can't remember the title or author. Can anyone help?

In a futuristic world, the featured event of the Olympics is a war game among the
nations. The winner of the game is the team (nation) who kills off the members of
the opposing team. The main character is the sole survivor from the US team. His
survival was kind of a fluke, rather than by any skill of his own. Even so, he is
regarded as a great hero for the US. As a national hero, he is afforded the
latitude to do whatever he wants. But he is scarred, an empty shell, from the
brutality of the game and the hypocrisy he feels over being seen as a hero for his
actions.

My husband graduated from high school in 1980, so the story had to be published
before then.

Thanks in advance,
Paula
