As a former Barnes & Noble moonlighter, I imitate their "face-outs,"
"end-caps," and rotating subject or author displays. But, we all try to market our
books.
Shelving was easy, at B&N, as we all had our PDA scanner to wand each book
for a location site. But, these could be multi-leveled; an educational book, for
example, might be under Theory and Research then subcatergory Educational
Philosophy - and then by author, BUT, if it contained worksheets or teacher's
guides it would go in an entirely different area where the books are arranged by
imprint. Not always visible on the spine!
And let's not forget B&N's arrangement of children's books by age group, then
format! So, Eric Carle's titles might be in the hardcover area, paperback
area, paperback spinner, toddler board book area and also in gift series books
along side a stuffed caterpiller.
I definately like Dewey better.
