She might want to create a "LibraryThing" account (
http://www.librarything.com/ )

and start adding her books. She would then have a list of her books
and see what types of subjects / genres that were listed.

Other possibilities might include: Shelfari http://www.shelfari.com/

Gurulib (this allows you to catalog your books at home):
http://www.gurulib.com/

Goodreads: http://www.goodreads.com

If she wants to just put the books on the shelves by genres using
labels for the spines, you could direct her to online library supply
companies like Demco that offer the various genre stickers. She could
purchase some for her collection and add them to her books for sorting
or shelving by genre in the classroom.

If she doesn't want to purchase the stickers, she could also make her
own using the Avery labels ( White Multi-Use Label 3/4 x 1" ). By
downloading the Avery Template for these stickers, she could then add
her own genre icons using pictures of things like "dragons for
fantasy" or "ghosts for scary books" and create personal labels for
her classroom book spines. (Avery Template site is online at:

Just a couple of ideas.
