Doctor Ted by Andrea Beaty; illustrated by Pascal Lemaitre (McElderry
Books, 2008). ISBN:978-4169-2820-1

Kids will giggle their way through this charming picture book as Ted,
a little brown bear with big confidence, launches his medical
career. With one big bandage and an office with a waiting room, Ted
is confident that business will be brisk, but even a house call to
his mother fails to enliven his trade. Not until he reaches school
does he find a ready (though sometimes less than willing) patient
pool to diagnose and treat. Children will love the mismatch between
diagnoses and recommended treatment and will identify with the
familiar school settings populated by a farmyard of animal characters
of various stripes rendered in brush and ink and digitally colored in
an appealing psychedelic palette. With an underlying message of the
power of personal confidence and imagination, Doctor Ted is sure to
be a crowd pleaser when shared during primary story sessions and will
leave kids guessing about Ted's next adventure as a fireman. Long
live imagination! [Suggested ages 4-7.] ~ Toni Buzzeo, MA, MLIS
