Years ago, when book rooms for guided reading books for classroom use
were started in our schools, I suggested that perhaps the contents of
the rooms should be listed in our Follett catalogs. I was thinking the
automated checkout system might be more efficient than the colored
clothespins teachers were using to check books out. But, I was told
the book rooms had nothing to do with the library and I should basically
mind my own business. I'm pretty good at that, so I've never mentioned
our automation system and book rooms in the same breath, in the ten
years since.

This fall we converted to Destiny from Circ Cat and some new
principals, frustrated with trying to manage the contents of their book
rooms, have asked me if there is anyway the book rooms can be part of
the new system. Of course, there is and I'm willing to talk with them
about it. But I want to be sure I think of all the ramifications before
I agree.

In the meantime, I'd be interested in hearing from any librarians who
list the contents of their school's book rooms in their Destiny.
- What are some of the good things about it?
- What are some of the bad things?
- Any, "Oh, I wish I had done that differently?" thoughts?
- Do you make the records for the book room items "hidden records" so
that they don't come up in general OAPC searches by the basic library
patron?
- Is there a way to designate book room items so that they don't appear
to be part of your library collection as far as your statistics?
- What obvious things am I overlooking?

Thanks in advance to anyone with experience to offer.
Chris
