Hi Netters: here's the request... some titles of books, 4th or 5th grade reading level, focusing on a boastful/bullyish/obnoxious child (preferably a boy) with consequences included in the book. A friend is having some difficulty with her son who is very bright and is exhibiting this behavior to a younger sister and a few kids his own age. The little boy is a good kid...the little sister deserves it, but the mom wants to curb the behavior. Here's the replies... 1. The Bully of Barkham Street by Mary Stolz - What made Martin Hastings, the 'bully' of A Dog on Barkham Street, behave the way he did? Martin resolves problems of his own in 'a sensitive study of a lonely, frustrated boy. The [family] relationships are exceptionally well drawn.' 2. Are you familiar with the David Mortimore Baxter series by Karen Tayleur. The series is a hoot with the moralistic background (not blatant, but David finds for himself, that his own actions are what escalate the troubles.) My kids love the books and they're never on the shelf. TITLES: Liar/ Excuses/ Manners/ Secrets/ Spies/ Promises/ The Truth/ Wild/ Chicken/ Haunted 3. Not sure if these exactly fit the bill, but here are a couple of possiblities: a. The Boy Who Lost His Face - Louis Sachar. A boy allows his friends to pressure him into mistreating an old neighbor woman, and immediately a series of odd coincidences convince him he's being punished. b. Fourth Grade Rats - Jerry Spinelli. A boy's friend convinces him that now that they're in fourth grade they need to start pushing the younger kids around. 4. My favorite in this vein would have to be The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, one of the Narnia chronicles. Surely reading about Eustace Clarence Scrubb and his reformation would influence any child.
