Here is my original request:

Hello all!
I would like to purchase additional print materials
for U. S. History "decades" research. We have quite a
few things but it never seems to be enough!
I checked the archives and discovered that many had
recommended series from Gale and Time Life in the
past.
Does anyone have any additional suggestions that they
have used successfully?
TIA! I will post a hit!
Vicki

And here are the wonderful responses I received!

I just bought a series I really like. It's called
Images and Issues of Women in the Twentieth Century,
and it's published by Twenty-First Century Books.
Individual titles include: Gibson Girls and
Suffragists; Flappers and the New American Woman;
Rosie and Mrs. America; Gidgets and Women Warriors;
and Ms. and the Material Girls.

Gareth Stevens has some great "decades" stuff -- Art
in the 20th
Century, technology, music, pop culture. We too did a
big push on this
a couple years back -- I bought tons of stuff and now
they have changed
focus -- URGGHHHHHH. Before you spend too much, ask
the question about
how long they anticipate this type of focus to remain
in the
 curriculum!

I have lots of decades print resoutces; I wish my
teachers would come
 in
and use them!

I have some reference sets:
Facts on File's _Day By Day: The Forties (Fifties,
Sixties, etc.)(2
vols. each set) is a chronological treatment.
Gale's American Decades set-(10 vols) each volume
has chapters on
World events, The arts, Business and the economy,
Education, Fashion,
Government an dpolitics, Law and justice, Lifestyles
and social trends,
Media, Medicine and health, Religion, Science and
technology, and
Sports.
Gale's The American Years (2 vols) is a
chronological treatment
     Simon and Schuster's Timetables of
History-softbound, inexpensive,
a really cool grid-type treatment, year by year
Chronicle of the World-big, fat volume arranged
by year, cursory
treatment, but good pictures
Great Stories of the Century: New York Times
Front Pages (an
oversized Barnes & Noble find)

In my general nonfiction section, I also have some
series:
Time-Life's This Fabulous Century set, which is more
of a world
treatment, and I don't know if it's still published.
Greenwood Press's American Popular Culture Through
History series (The
1910's, The 1920's, etc)expensive, but good.
Greenhaven Press's America's Decades series (The
1900s, The 1910s, etc)
Greenhaven's Great Speeches in History series, (The
1960s, etc.)
Lucent Books's The Way People Live series books, like
Life During the
Roaring Twenties, Life in America During the 1960s,
etc. I don't think
they do every single decade.
Lucent's World History series books, like America in
the 1960s, but
 also
not on every single decade
Facts on File's An Eyewitness History individual
volumes, like The
Roaring Twenties
UXL's The Roaring Twenties: Almanac and Primary
Sources set.

And as soon as I got this great collection together,
the social studies
teacher retired and I haven't been able to reel the
new guy in.
  ARGH!!!

We have books from Facts on File, Time-Life books on
decades, as well
 as
books from Lucent books in San Diego. Hope that
helps. We use Gumdrop

books and Davidson.

Two sets worth looking at are:
Bowling, Beatniks, and Bell-Bottom: Pop culture of
20th century America

century America

We have the Gale decades
also have books on time lines.

We have the UXL American Decades set and also, from
Grolier, multi
volume sets on the Twenties, Fifties, and Sixties and
order each new
 set
as it is released. The are well used by high school
students and
teachers for decade research.

Thanks again for all of the help!
