I think there is wisdom in JK's message. I tried reading a Mad Magazine
about ten years ago. I was thoroughly disgusted. This was a magazine that I
loved as a junior high/high school/college student. It wasn't the same
magazine! There was nothing clever about it. It struck me as a bit sick.
Here's what I plan to do. As soon as the blizzard is finished in Ohio, I'll
buy a copy of Mad and give it another chance. That doesn't mean I will
definitely purchase it for our collection even if I love the current Mad. It
means I will read it, review it, weigh it, and decide whether the magazine
fits our selection policy and is a best choice for our limited budget.

I only have one word of caution regarding MAD or other magazines that are on
the edge.....

Please remember what was "cutting edge" satire in the 60s/70s is now
considered tame. The edge is now further out. Because the edge keeps
moving, it means that as librarians we need to renew the content of
magazines to the appropriateness of our student body.

This is the same caution for the authors who are pushing the YA boundaries.
Each book needs to be reviewed for the appropriateness for our school.

Happy reading.JaKay Greer Teacher-LibrarianMiddle schoolAlbany,
