ORIGINAL REQUEST

I'm working on a project and feeling so frustrated. I can't find any
useful sites that will allow kids to identify agricultural, natural
resource, and manufactured products for each state. Is that because
the good old World Book really is the best resource or do you have
other suggestions?

RESPONSES:

Country Facts from SIRS Discoverer. Unfortunately that's a paid
database and can only be accessed by password.

Did you try InfoPlease?

What you are looking for is in paragraph form there, unfortunately,
and so a little more difficult to find than from a list.

I've had good luck with Information Please for a project like
this. The students have been able to find just about all they needed.

I still send these questions to the encyclopedia. And I think you're
right - World Book does it best.

Have you checked the state almanacs? I know that Texas has the state
almanac online, so I'm assuming that other states would too. These
usually have many basic pieces of information including agriculture,
natural resources, etc.

Here are a few that I've found:

Oklahoma
<http://www.odl.state.ok.us/almanac/online.htm>http://www.odl.state.ok.us/almanac/online.htm

Texas
<http://www.texasalmanac.com/history/>http://www.texasalmanac.com/history/

InfoPlease Almanac

World Almanac for Kids Online (also in print)

50 States
<http://www.50states.com/>http://www.50states.com/ (I like this
one--I've used it with students
when I didn't have enough almanacs in print)

Just a few thoughts....(and a good research assignment....I'd like to
find more online almanacs!)

There is a great alphabet book called N is for the Natural State that
has wonderful facts about our state. Of course, Billy and Hilly are
included....... Diamonds, oil wells, lakes, etc. are featured in a
wonderful picture book. Try it!

Have you tried...
http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0108237.html

Those were the two that came up with resource info. Interesting
research topic.

I am sure you have already located these, but just in case...
This is a good site for agricultural products
<http://www.nass.usda.gov/index.asp>http://www.nass.usda.gov/index.asp;
for geological resources <http://www.usgs.gov/>http://www.usgs.gov/;
http://www.nps.gov/ for parks,
<http://www.fs.fed.us/>http://www.fs.fed.us/ for forests; for other
data including manufacturing go to
<http://www.census.gov/acsd/www/sub_m.htm>http://www.census.gov/acsd/www/sub_m.htm

Would this work? World Almanac for Kids. Scroll down to the 50
states. Click on a state and read all about it. Click on the Economy section.
