I had a request to post a hit for all responses I received on the above topic:

My favorite realistic fiction for that age group:
The Clementine books by Sara Pennypacker - must have. There are three so far,
Clementine, The Talented Clementine and Clementine's Letter
All about Sam by Lois Lowry, my second grade teachers read this aloud and the kids
love it and clamor for it to read themselves.
Lady Lollipop by Dick King Smith
Toys Go Out by Emiliy Jenkins, technically not realistic, but a real favorite
Kimberly Willis Holt is venturing into writing for the younger set with a planned
series called Piper Reed. The first, Piper Reed, Navy Brat, is very promising.
One of my favorites this year is Moxie Maxwell Does Not Love Stuart Little by Peggy
Gifford - very creative story about summer reading that hasn't gotten done!
The Ivy and Bean books by Barrows
The Dear, Dumb Diary books by Benton are very popular at my school but I haven't
read them
Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo
The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies
Phineas L. MacGuire books by Francis ORoark Dowell - there are two Phineas...Erupts
and Phineas...Gets Slimed
Judy Moody and Stink books by Megan MacDonald
Jennifer and Matt Holm's Babymouse books are never on the shelf. I would classify
them as realistic and my kids just love graphic novels.
Gooney Bird Green books by Lois Lowry
Shredderman books by Wendelin Van Draanen

I've always liked Randall's Wall. It deals with neglect and how a child can become
an outcast through no fault of his own. I think's best for grades 3 or 4.

Love that Dog
Walk Two Moons
Because of Winn Dixie
Boys Against Girls
Bridge to Terabithia
Hatchet
PS Longer Letter Later
Frindle
Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing
Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key

Andrew Clements is great for 3-4

Clementine by Sara Pennypacker is wonderful!

Mallory on the Move and sequels by Laurie B. Friedman, 9 in series so far (grades
3-4)

Enjoy!
