Hello -

Due to budget probelms the school district I work for has decided to reduce the
number of librarians it employs.
There are four of us.
The junior high librarian retired in January. She was replaced with a math teacher.
The high school librarian was told last week that she will no longer be needed
after the end of the school year.
Aides will run the libraries.
That leaves the middle school librarian and me. We were told that we will cover the
librarian duties at all four schools.

Our teacher's association just settled a contract that gave the staff a 4.9% salary
increase. The state then said the budget can not be raised more than 3%.

This makes us the only district in our county with no high school librarian.
Maybe one of the few in New Jersey.

Do you know of any high schools in NJ with no librarian? I'd love to be able to
say, "if you continue with your plan we will have the only high school in the state
with no librarian."

Can you give me documented statistics proving test scores are higher on an average
in high schools with librarians?

I need info I can quote.

The librarians are meeting with a NJEA lawyer next week to plan our reaction. We
are being very very careful. It's a difficult position to be in. Yelling and
screaming and gnashing of teeth won't work, I'm afraid, even tho that's my gut
reaction. I am very afraid that the middle school librarian and I will be gone next
year.
