[LM_NET] Target: Tips for old bookcases?

My library has the original wooden bookcases (over 40 years old) and are looking 
terrible. Over the years, students have carved initials and inappropriate words in 
the wood. I have tried to fill in some of the marks with a brown magic marker, set 
plants in these areas, but it still looks bad. I don't want to cover the tops with 
contact paper. Does anyone have any suggestions for sprucing up these shelves.
