May 14th is National Library Legislative Day, where library workers from across the nation take a few minutes to contact the offices of their members of Congress in support of legislation key to libraries and their patrons. This is an especially important event for library workers who serve teens, because you are their voice. Many teens aren't old enough to vote, so they must rely on concerned adults such as yourself to speak on their behalf. Despite your busy schedules, YALSA is asking that you take a few moments on the 14th to contact Congressional offices about the issues that are listed here: http://www.ala.org/ala/yalsa/TalkingPoints_Advoca.pdf If time allows, why not make it a fun event, serve refreshments and invite your Teen Advisory Group, parents and other library supporters to help you reach out to Congress? You're encouraged to supplement the attached talking points with personal stories, newspaper articles, photos etc. that illustrate the many ways libraries have a positive impact on the lives of teens. And while you have their attention, why not invite them to an upcoming event at your library? It is an election year for many Congress members and they do love a photo op! The preferred method of contacting the legislators is via phone or fax. If you must mail something to them (like a library newsletter or photos), be sure to send it to their local office, not the Washington DC one. Contact info is here http://www.capwiz.com/ala/home/ Thanks so much for taking the time to reach out to Congress and let them know why libraries matter to teens! Feel free to share your ideas and success stories on YALSA's wiki at http://wikis.ala.org/yalsa/index.php/National_Library_Legislative_Day .
