ORIGINAL POST: Do you know which reading skills your students have scored low in on the TAKS over the past few years? If so, I'd love to hear from you today, May 29. RESPONSES: Inference (5-8) Inference Main idea in fiction. The teachers seem to have non-fiction covered. Fact and opinion is another trouble spot for third graders too. Over the years, our students have had difficulties in TAKS reading tests with the questions about summary and main idea. Based on what I've heard in professional development sessions before, nonfiction is always more challenging to our students than fiction is. Along those lines, it would seem our students have trouble with summarizing and main idea MORE in nonfiction than in fiction, because the nonfiction reading is more difficult for them overall.
