Based on a posting about "best thing I did this year" I got the idea of doing summer checkouts for students. I posed the idea to my principal who was very enthusiastic especially since "reading for meaning" is one of our school improvement goals. The notice has gone out in the parent newsletter so the die is cast. One of the problems I know I will encounter has to do with students leaving over the summer since we are a DoD school our population can be very fluid. Also, the library is not open over the summer though someone is at school in the main office. I plan to require a signed parent notice before checking books out. I also plan to give each student checking out books a sheet with school mailing address incase they do wind up leaving. If you have done something similar, any other things I should think about as I begin this project. I did check the archives and found a hit from 2001 in which the responses indicated this is a good program and worth the effort. I would just like any updates people may have. Deborah Stafford Gen.
