We put the levels on all books and tell our kids (middle school) they are reverse
speed limits. The higher the level, the longer it will take to read the books. It
has nothing to do with ability, but is simply a time factor. We have had no
problem as they don't pay attention to other people's level, but to titles. By
having this information on the spine, they can browse and know what they are
getting into length and difficulty-wise before they even pick up the book to look
it over. I read these postings yesterday and asked several of my kids if they
would rather have the information on the inside of the book for privacy, and they
were horror struck. They like it on the outside because it saves time--They don't
have to take the book off the shelf and open it up to see if they can handle it.
With this information, they can concentrate on finding a book they like, and read
summaries and evaluate a larger number of titles very quickly.

Subject: AR, RC and colored dots

I put a single color dot on all the AR books. One could at a glance see we had an
AR test for that title. I did put a sticker inside the cover with the reading
level, point value, and test number. It wasn't obvious to anyone what the level
was- what was bvious was just that book had an AR test.

In the catalog the reading level and point value were noted. I showed students and
parents how to use the catalog to find books on their level.
