A science teacher in our building does a knitting club in the library once a week
in the winter months. We have had 10-25 participants. Yes, we have had boys, about
5 so far. One is very proficient. We also have several crocheters join us.

There is a book, 'chicks with sticks', that we talked about once.

About 1/3 know how to knit or learned here and keep coming. The rest start fresh
every year.

We had a tshirt made, which was very popular, it said 'varsity knitting' on the
front with a ball of yarn and a set of needles under it. On the back, it said, and
this is with admin and athletic dept approval, 'If knitting were easy, it would be
called football." It was a very popular shirt.

We also get small knit/yarn shops to give us some discounts for their stores.

I wish I would have required that all participants knit 4 inches on a community
scarf to be displayed in the library. It would probably be 20 feet long by now.
Suggest you do that.

You can also have the participants make scarves/hats for the homeless in your area,
any extras they make.

I have personally progressed from dish clothes to felted slippers. Not well, but
recognizable.

With your suggestion, I will start playing an audiobook in the background. Will
love seeing the responses you get.

Are you going to keep the knitting class to just girls? I know some boys that enjoy
knitting.

I've noticed that many of the students in my school have taken up
knitting.  I'm thinking about starting a drop in and knit program called "Get
Hooked on Reading" one afternoon  / week and playing an audiobook or reading
poetry.  Does anyone do
this in their school library?  Can you suggest a great audiobook,
preferably not too long, that I can play for high school girls?  Thanks
in advance!
