Okay, I know there was recently a hit for 4th grade reading at a high lexile, but I am looking for titles for 6th grade maturity appropriate at a high lexile. I am currently student teaching at a middle school and was asked by a 6th grade language arts teacher if I could generate a list of age appropriate fiction titles for her 6th grade students that are reading at a lexile range of 1100 - 1200. I do have some personal opinions about this, such as why push a 6th grader who is cabable of reading at such a high lexile to read in a high lexile range when they are probably already a very motivated reader ? But it is an interesting question, and I also get this asked frequently in the public library where I currently work. I am familiar with Lexile.com and when I search fiction I get very few fiction titles, and ones that I would never ask a 6th grader to read...like Thomas Hardy's *Far From the Madding Crowd.* Sure* *does sound like something for a 6th grader to sink their teeth into, eh?!!! I also searched Titlewave with a limiter for the lexile range and did get a few more titles that were appropriate, like the Series of Unfortunate Events books, just throw a few vocabulary words in there and you've got the high lexile..but I'd love to offer some more suggestions. Any ideas out there for some good titles for this high a range? I know non-fiction is always a way to push the lexile range higher, but I'm specifically looking for fiction. I will post a hit if there is interest. Thanks! Maren Wilbur SLMS candidate.
