With the research season (Spring semester) soon approaching, I thought
I'd share some observations about what's happening at the Academic
level regarding citing sources.

If you or your teachers are teaching (or primarily using) ONLY the MLA
style for citing research, be aware that the primary style manual used
by many academic disciplines is APA. I've contacted approximately 30
different university librarians across the country to ask what they
find to be the "standard" for citations and the APA format seems to be
the style used by most students enrolled in a wide variety of
disciplines including the humanities--- which has often been
associated with the MLA citation format.

To ensure academic success in this "nearly-always frustrating area of
research" for students, I would advise high school teachers (and
librarians) to "mix it up" and teach both the MLA and APA citation
styles in order to prepare those college-bound students for what they
might find at their particular university. (I've already seen a few
students this semester "bite the dust" because they failed the
bibliography component of their research, so this is just a "head's
up" for those future freshmen who aren't aware of other styles or
formats!)
