Thanks again to everyone who responded. After reading the responses I have decided to pick up a few of these titles and review them for myself to see if they are appropriate for my student population. Original Post: I am putting together my fall book order, and I'm considering some of the books from Harlequin's Kimani Tru imprint. I checked the archives and there were several Targets on these books, but I didn't see any Hits posted. I have only been able to find reviews for a couple of titles. I need to know if you've read any of these books, if they're popular with your students, and if they'd be appropriate for an urban middle school population or if they'd be better restricted to high school. I will post a HIT! Responses: I was very excited when I spotted the Kimani Tru books. I got two and ordered more. I ended up taking some back as the language and content got too raw/edgy for my library. Now I read them before purchase. Some are good, some okay, and some not. Because the main characters are high school, the middle school kids would probably like them, but some of the situations would be more appropriate for more mature readers. I did not do the Harlequin's, but would guess they would run in the same vein, where some would be fine and others too edgy. Hope that helps a little. ____________________________________________________________________________ Very popular with my ninth grade girls and I don't think there's anything truly objectionable in them for 7th and 8th. I read one awhile ago when they first started. I haven't read the resent ones as they are never on the shelves and there is a waiting list when the new one of the month comes in.... ____________________________________________________________________________ have a couple of the Kimani Tru books in my collection. I'm in a high school and haven't actually read one myself. They do get checked out. I think they are cleaner than some of the other urban lit out there. When I first heard of the series I checked the Harlequin website and sent them an email. They sent me some promotional material. Hope this helps. _____________________________________________________________________________ The stories are very nice, clean, no raw language or over-the-top sex. I have them in my public library teen collection, but see mostly high school girls reading them.
