I will have to say that one of my colleagues read about what we do
when he was getting his master's degree in administration. He told me
that he had no idea how much I did (or could have done if I had not
had three schools at that time in my career). This was about 1983.
But you are correct, Paula, this is not a general trend. I think that
any administrator who knows what we do shows this by the schedule
that he/she allows us to have. I have always had fixed classes (no
aide), but in general have had principals who allowed me a block of
"library administration" time in my schedule (never enough, but it
keeps me having positive thoughts...)
The problem with educating the teachers in the building is that you
keep having to do it and do it and do it as people retire, transfer,
etc. Our music and art teachers say the same. You just have to keep
doing those one-on-one things to let your faculty members know how
your work life is different (yet similar) to theirs. Sometimes it is
easy, but often it is very difficult to do all of this positive PR,
but it is a necessity.

P.S. Coincidentally, we just discussed having a job trade day. Our
heavily pregnant Kindergarten teacher subbed for third grade (so that
third grade teacher could go on the K field trip and she didn't have
to...) and she was amazed and delighted with what her first class had
achieved in just three years!
