While you are discussing courses on teaching others about the value of the media
center, and courses that encourage media specialists to promote themselves, I am
reminded that another listserv has been having heated discussion about the fact
that, in Pennsylvania at least, a certified teacher can take the Library Praxis
and become a Certified School Librarian in a morning. Our main argument is that
they are coming to librarianship without the depth of understanding of the actual
vision and purpose of a Library Media Center that trained and dedicated Librarians
are mastering through their own education. I hope that as Departments of
Education are encouraged to value the Media Center more it is because of the
knowledge and skills of the trained librarian, not the score on a Praxis test.

I agree with Laura wholeheartedly. I would like to see a required course in
use of the media center as part of undergraduate teaching/educational
programs. I try to snag new teachers and student teachers but I currently
have a faculty of 200 and if they don't come to me for help, it's tough
sometimes to reach them. I do attend department meetings when I can wangle
an invitation, collaborate with those who are willing, send frequent emails
of resources, a monthly newsletter, etc. but still am not seeing some
teachers that I expect to use the media center as often as I would like them
to do so.

Laura also makes a point about administrators. Many do not know what to
expect from a media specialist or have any idea what we can do and how we
can contribute.
