Considering the average reading level in every day life is about 6.0 - 7.0, it's
hard to find books much higher than that. AR was designed to motivate reluctant,
usually younger, readers. Renaissance Learning believes that reading on any level
constitutes practice, which is critical to fluency. Think hard about the purpose of
AR for your upper grades. In my opinion, AR is best suited for younger grades, not
high school.

Hello!

I am a brand new high school librarian (today was my first day!), but several
students have already "warned" me about a potential problem. Our 7th - 9th grade
use the AR program, but a vast majority of the books in the library are at lower
book levels (between 4-6.5) and they can't find anything that they want to read.
The books that we have that are at the higher levels often don't appeal to a
majority of the students (i.e. the classics). I would appreciate any suggestions
for AR books above a 6.5 reading level that have proven popular with students!

Thanks!
