I can't speak to the rest but now that the Genesis of Shannara series is done, it is the prequels to the rest. It tells you how the Elf Kingdom? came to be and how we humans are to blame. I really loved it. I haven't read the elf books nor will I probably pick them up but my kids wanted to read this other series for book club and The Gypsy Morph was just published this month. I actually listened on CD and it was great. I'd do them first if I was going to start now then I'd go into the series with what the elves are up to.Carolyn Roys Lake Park High School East Campus Media Specialist Roselle, IL 60172crroys@hotmail.com croys@lphs.org630.295.5282 Date: Thu, 11 Sep 2008 11:15:36 -0400From: LISTSERV@LISTSERV.SYR.EDUSubject: LM_NET Digest - 11 Sep 2008 - Special issue (#2008-1227)To: LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU--Forwarded Message Attachment--Date: Thu, 11 Sep 2008 11:15:36 -0400From: LISTSERV@LISTSERV.SYR.EDUSubject: LM_NET Digest - 11 Sep 2008 - Special issue (#2008-1227)To: LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDUThere are 11 messages totalling 563 lines in this issue. She needs to find poems that have examples of the basic forms of figurative language (simile, metaphor, personification, the usual). Are there any websites out there that would allow the user to search poems by figurative language term? Or, does anyone out there have some personal favorite poems that fit the bill? If you send along the title, we can look them up. I'm currently pulling our non-fiction books on poetry, and I have a few favorite individual poems of my own. I would, however, appreciate any additional suggestions. I thought everyone might be interested in the following from the report. 1.Here are results from a Pew Internet and American Life Project and University of Illinois Libraries Survey, June 4, 2007; 2796 people were surveyed. Internet is Top Source for Answers. People seeking information on problems consult The Internet - 58% Professional Advisors - 53%Friends and family - 45%Newspapers, magazines and books - 36%Government office or agency - 34%Television and radio - 16%Public Library - 13%Other - 11% The report also discussed search engines. The following is from the article. Apparently Librarians are the best search engine around. "At present, automated information searches - unlike librarians - don't understand human language and may often fail to unearth the best available answers to a query. "Ideally, we would understand your question, we would understand all knowledge and match the two," but that vision is a long way from today's reality, said Udi Manber, a vice president of engineering at Google."Footnote:44. I know he will find some new interests from the list. Here are the results:Thanks again to those who responded... I just finished reading "The Mysterious Benedict Society" in preparation for giving it to one of my high level 5th graders to read. It goes kind of along the hero theme, but regular kids are the heroes. I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the story and there is a continuation of the story. Also "The looking Glass Wars" was good too. Hope this helps. ---Perhaps he would like heroes who are kids:Anthony Horowitz's Alex Rider Series (my 5th grade boys' favorite)Ally Carter's I'd tell you that I love you but then I'd have to kill you, and its sequelChristopher Paolini's Eragon, et al.Cornelia Funke's Inkheart, et al.---He may well enjoy the Bones graphic novel series. I can't keep them on the shelf and I've two complete sets!---Books by Jerry Spinelli or Andrew Clements were some of my son's favorite authors last year when he was in 5th grade. They have a lot of humor in them and material most kids can relate to. I'm not sure what reading level they are - not overly challenging, but enough "meat" to them to not be "babyish". He went through several of them when we wanted to take a break from higher reading levels/longer books, etc. Several of the 5th grade students are interested in Joey Pigza books (main character) too. I am a new librarian to the profession and to the school I'm at, so I can't recall any others at the moment, but hope this will get you started. We are boarding up for Ike, so if all goes well, I'll try to remember to get back with you if you haven't received other ideas.---My just past fifth grade above level son who loves to read ate up the following:Percy Jackson series by Rick RiordanThe Warriors series by Erin HunterRedwall series by Brian JacauesFable Haven series by Brandon MullHopes these work for your young friend.---My son loves the Lightning Thief books by Rick Riordan http://www.rickriordan.com/ Also the Ranger's Apprentice series by John Flanagan http://www.rangersapprentice.com/ Other books that are popular in my library are the Levin Thumbs books by Obert Skye.
