My original post was:

I am in search of a great PowerPoint or activity to introduce Dewey,
does anyone have anything they would recommend? I have found some Dewey
ppts but they just jump right in and I want the students to get a brief
introduction to this subject....any suggestions would be helpful.

As always, LM_NET is the best!!! :-)

I received a lot of great information!! :-)

Here are some of the responses....

I like to use the library music CD from Upstart that has the song "Thank
You, Melvil Dewey". I also use the other Dewey Decimal song on that
track and then teach the kids the "dance" of using body parts to help
remember the locations of the various subjects in Dewey (also
complements of Upstart)

Dear Lori,

I found this ppt at the beginning of the school year and have used it
for grades 2-5. The kids really like how it compares organizing the
books to organizing your dresser drawers. Then I followed up the next
week by pulling a few books from each section (100's, 200's etc.) Each
student held a book and we lined everyone up in order by call numbers.
That seemed to make it more concrete to them.

Hope that helps!

This site has some great visuals, especially Dewey and the Alien which
uses student drawings to tell the story of the ten categories. I use it
every year with third and fourth grades.

Hi Lori

I like the story of Dewey coming up with his system while talking with
an alien found on the following site.

Hope that this is what you are looking for.

I had found another site but it won't connect now. I will give it to
you in hopes that the problem is temporary.

You might try "Do we" really know Dewey at
http://library.thinkquest.org/5002/
<http://library.thinkquest.org/5002/> It is very good and if you have
the caveman Dewey you can compare.

Lori,
I use a video The Dewey Decimal Dilemma from Media Incorporated. It is
goofy, but the students love it!

It probably won't help you for now, but I use the book The Shelf Elf
Helps Out by Jackie Mims Hopkins to help introduce Dewey and I also give
out a bookmark (nothing fancy, just something simple that I copy on
construction paper). I attached a copy of the sheet I use for the
bookmarks.

Hi Lori,

Here's one that I developed for some of out volunteers at a public
library. It certainly not the best ppt, and may not be applicable to
for elementary students, but you're welcome to use any part of it you
want.

Hi Lori,

It's not a powerpoint, but I have used this webquest with success:
http://www.barnstable.k12.ma.us/mme/news/studentinvestigations/WebQuests
/dewey/studentpages/sintro.html

It gives some background on Dewey himself, call numbers and nonfiction,
and then moves in to talk more specifically about each section of the DD
system. I usually do it with the class, so I don't use the links part in
adventure two (I don't know if any are broken), but with older students
I imagine you could. I just like it because the internet part, the
puzzel and the earning of "food" keeps their interest more than some of
the other lessons I have tried.
