Hi All, The term ICT has multiple meanings simply because people throw it around and use it to mean several different things. Information Communications Technologies are those technologies that allow you to be networked and communicate using a range of interconnected technologies. ie. mobile phones, which also allow email, text messaging and access to the Internet, the Internet/Web, Web 2.0 Often see ITC literacy and computer literacy used interchangably when they are in fact 2 different skill sets. You might use ICTs in your research and teaching and learning, but ICTs are a tool, a delivery mode and sometimes a resource - they are not a method for instruction, that is pedagogy and the curriculum you develop which is something else entirely. Although you may use ICTs to assist your instruction and some of your instruction may include the development of skills in how to use ICTs efficiently and effectively. Hope this hasn't made it even more confusing! The main issue here is that people from all sectors use the same terms but actually mean different things. :) BC Vice President, Advocacy & Promotion, IASL: www.iasl-online.org LIS@ECU: http://www.chs.ecu.edu.au/portals/LIS/index.php Australian School Library Research Project: http://www.chs.ecu.edu.au/portals/ASLRP/ Barbara Combes, Lecturer School of Computer and Information Science Edith Cowan University, Perth Western Australia Ph: (08) 9370 6072 Email: b.combes@ecu.edu.au "Whatever the cost of our libraries, the price is cheap compared to that of an ignorant nation." Stream Sent: Saturday, 4 April 2009 2:23 AM To: LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU Subject: [LM_NET] Information and Communication Technology - just what is it? I've been doing some reading about "Information and Communication Technology", but I can't get a real simple, clear definition of what it is about. It appears to be occuring under this name in Europe and Australia. It appears to be a way of integrating technolgy into research and learning like the new Standards for the 21st Century Learner from AASL and the NETS from ISTE. So, if someone out there is an Information and Communication Technology instructor or expert, would you please share with me what it is you do? Thanks very much! Thomas M.
