Paul Volponi is an excellent author if you want to look at diversity not
only between races, but within it as well.  Two excellent novels out of
many:
Hurricane Song
Response (his latest one)

Also try:
Sherman Alexie:  Diary of a Part Time Indian
Walter Dean Myers: Street Love
Face Relations (story collection)
Naughts and Crosses (can't remember the author, but a futuristic novel
with a Romeo and Juliet twist)

Hello,

We are considering changing our usual fall reading event (small group
discussions, lots of titles to choose from) to an all school read next
year.
We would like to have a juicy book, fiction or nonfiction (I prefer
fiction)
that deals with issues of diversity and social class. Something that
will
really engage this group and get us talking about some challenging
issues.
I'd welcome any suggestions. It's ok if it's edgy as long as it will
get
their interest.
