Thanks to all who replied to my questions on New Moon Girls magazine.   The
website is
http://www.newmoon.com/magazine/?code=SEMG&gclid=CK75-c-sxpwCFeNB5god31YZKQ if you
want to check it out.  They now have the latest issue online to preview.  It
wasn’t working (probably taking down the previous issue and putting up the new
one), so they are mailing me a copy.  The replies I received are below.

We are a rural school, so ours might not be a completely relevant opinion.  I used
to subscribe to NEW MOON but stopped a couple of years ago because no one checked
it out.  It is a little sophisticated and I would say more appropriate to middle
school grades.  Very much a feminist feel to the book.  There was something about
it that always bugged me, too, (personally), though I am not quite sure why.  If
you settle upon a subscription or 2 you decide upon, please let us know.  Good
luck.

I used to get New Moon at my 6-8th grade library and it was NEVER read.  I added
Justine last year and it is very popular.  I am adding Kiki this year on the
recommendation of a fellow librarian.

New Moon is awesome!  Very positive, with a lot of girl-written content.  I am
pretty sure that they would send you a sample copy if you asked.

I ordered it for my K-6 school after several recommendations.  I just got my first
issue, and in looking through it have found the following topics: worrying about
getting your period at school, puberty causing the growth of body hair-including
pubic hair, and women in Afghanistan not having to consent to sex.  I'm not sure
I'm comfortable with this even for just 5th grade.  After I get the next issue and
see if it is along the same lines, I'm going to decide whether to cancel the
subscription or not.  I requested a preview copy about 2 years ago, but it wasn't
so questionable.  Maybe email them and ask for a preview copy.  Hope this helps!

I love this magazine.  It features real girls and isn't like Seventeen with only
air-brushed beauties on the over, etc.  New Moon still has articles of real
interest to girls though and does it without coming across as frumpy, etc.  Having
said all of that, I stopped my subscription because no one here was reading it.  I
was hopeful that our girls would like it, but it was just too young for them.  I
think it would be great for your 5th and 6th graders.  If you haven't already,
take a look at its Web site to give you a feel for it.
___
I haven't read it recently, but did love it back when I was in public school.
Maybe their website will send you a free trial issue?

I recently moved this magazine from our 2--4 side of the library to the 5--8 side
because of content.  I like the magazine but it doesn't go out much.

Do you take Discovery Girls? We love it!

I started subscribing to New Moon last year.  It is a great magazine but will take
some promoting..it is not "glamorous"...but the info included in it is great!
Once I got a few students reading it...it has been a hit.

___
I ordered it last year and the girls are NOT reading it nor checking it out. When I
asked some of the 5th grade girls about it last year, they just shrugged and said
it didn't seem very good. When I asked for more info, they said they liked things
about fashion, "girl stuff" cliques,  music, etc. and this magazine does NOT have
that type of information. Plus, I would not say it is very multicultural, meaning
it does not seem to address concerns and popular, up to date items that Hispanic
girls can relate to.
I ordered it again this year and hope to do a better job of magazine talking it but
if I still don't have much circulation of it, I won't carry it again.

Have you looked at Discovery Girls? While it doesn't seem too multicultural, my
girls eat it up! I can't keep it on the shelf and they even enjoy the past issues
when they can't get the current one.

I am in a K-6 urban school and am looking for some magazine suggestions.  My girls
like American Girl, but I'm looking for something more urban or multi-cultural.
The magazine rep mentioned New Moon.  So far I haven't found a copy locally to
look at.  Any thoughts?  I did check the archives - most messages were from the
90's.  A couple mentioned appropriate ages might be more middle school.  I might
decide to restrict to 5th and 6th graders.  I'd appreciate any thoughts you have
on New Moon or other recommendations.

Thanks to all in advance.
