I am in my first year as a school media specialist. My library was divided with 2 separate shelving units: 1 for middle school students and 1 for high school students. I have opened the check out for middle school students to check out whatever interests them (which thrilled them). I'm not sure of the reasoning that was used to separate the books. I made the decision to open up the checkout after finding the other half of my Harry Potter books and the first Twilight book in the high school section. I spoke with the administrators and the middle school staff before making this decision. I would like to hear from others who have had or are in similar situations. Have you consolidated your libraries or do you have restricted sections? I am contemplating setting up an "approved" section for students to be able to check out with parent permission books like "A Thousand Splendid Suns" and "Sold" but I'm not sure if this is the right solution or not. Thank you in advance for sharing your wisdom and experience!
