There have been questions here recently on how to get students/teacher to use databases. I have various methods. This one works well with 12th graders when I teach them about scholarly/peer-reviewed publications. DISCLAIMER: This is NOT my idea. I got it from a workshop, and I totally forgot to write down the name of the person who shared this method. All I can remember is that she was a college librarian. Basically - the idea is to ask the following question. What is your favorite kind of chocolate? Write the ideas on one side of the board, and then when you are done - write them in order of which is the most expensive in terms of cost AND the effort it takes to find it. So - Godiva chocolate takes a little more money and effort to acquire, but can really add to the "chocolate loving" experience. Sometimes Hersheys/Google works well for a "quick chocolate fix" - but other times Godiva/Databases are worth the effort to enhance that chocolate experience =) When you are done, write Google on one side of the page and Databases on the other, listing the relative merits of each. It is NOT a slam on Google et al at all. If you look at my full outline, you will see that. After that the students delve into the advanced options of the databases we own via a group of questions about the 2 databases we use the most. Each team of kids gets a group of questions to answer via the "discovery" method. Their job is to answer the questions - and then teache the rest of the class how they found the answers. If anyone is interested, I have uploaded my detailed lesson outline onto my "videos and files" storage page. 1. click on the link to my library page (url in my signature) 2. Click on "videos and files" on the left navigation panel 3. When asked for a password - here it is: rachs 4. Click on How are Databases Like Chocolate?
