Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I found some great books and some
great resources that I added to my Delicious account!

_____

ORIGINAL REQUEST:
I need titles that are GREAT books for grades 3 and 4. Specifically, books
that would fall (loosely) into one of the following genres: mystery,
realistic fiction, historical fiction, biography, and fantasy.

By GREAT I mean books that have some lasting merit (looking for something
beyond Captain Underpants) but are still books that kids can't put down
and get them asking for more.

The majority of our students are ESL but in each grade there are a couple
of very high readers as well.

Thanks for any suggestions you can throw my way...

RESPONSES:
historical fiction- Someone named Eva
realistic fiction- Alvin Ho, or Gollywhopper Games
biography- What to do about Alice

 I write for author James Patterson's website, www.ReadKiddoRead.com--so I
can recommend books I know kids will read and love. Take a look. You'll
find books for grades PreK-teen, in 4 age levels and 4 categories. More
than 250 reviews up, so far--lots to choose from. Click on COMMUNITY, pull
down LISTS, and you'll find booklists of all sorts as well. Enjoy.

for your higher 4th graders, try MY LOUISIANA SKY,by Kimberly Willis
Holt(a really lovely book about a young girl who grows up the summer she
loses her grandmother and comes to realize that her parents are
developmentally delayed.)This book has a really nice video, too.for the
3rd and some 4th graders,a book called THE FLUNKING OF JOSHUA T. BATES is
a good choice. The boy flunks 3rd grade,in part because he does not read
well. Thus, he is torn between his old friends and his new classmates. The
author is Susan Shreve. I used to do this as a read- to- them activity and
the only books more popular were JUNIE B.JONES.

My 3rd and 4th graders are reading (and fighting over) the Secrets of
Droon series by Tony Abbott and while not great literature they are fun
and a good example of fantasy for that age.?The kids are? also enjoying
are the Wiley And Grampa's Creature Features by Kirk Scroggs,? Franny K.
Stein, mad scientist by Jim Benton., & the Tiara Club at Ruby Mansions by
Vivian French. Some of these are?a little harder but the kids enjoy them
enough that they work through the hard words and ask for the next in the
series.
_____

I don't know if you've found abookandahug.com yet but it's a great
resource for finding good books. If you go on the site, click on the Find
a Book box in the upper right hand corner. Then, you can search the
category you want using the Middle Reader Reading Level. Hopefully you'll
find a treasure trove for your kids. By the way, kids love finding their
own books using the site, too.
