I have a question on the same topic of vertical files. Ours hadn't been updated in
awhile, and the librarian before me had removed all records of them from our
system. We still have the files, though, and the librarian previous to the one
right before me has brought in new files that have good information in them.
All of these have been sort of in a holding pattern because I'm not sure how to
handle the new ones. What is the procedure for labeling them? Is there a set of
vertical file subject headings to make everything more easily sorted and accessed?
How does one create a MARC record for them?
I am hesitant to do away with them because not all information is available online.
I have gone to the county library recently to get information from old newspaper
articles only available in their vertical files.
I know this is not a top priority. If I were working without an aide, I wouldn't
worry about them, but right now, I do have a chance to update them if I can figure
out the best way to do it.
I would appreciate any help you can give.
