Hi All,
So the smart board is really just a BB but without the chalk. Your lesson delivery
is therefore the same as it was before. Your focus has been on using the technology
rather than on changing the pedagogy (yes I know, THAT word again) or how you
teach. If the smart board is used by the whole class as an interactive tool then
you may have more success.
Eg.
- when brainstorming a session kids do it in pairs first (less intimidating for shy
students), then in groups of four. Each group places information on the SB - a side
column on the board is separated out for useful vocabulary - they add to this too.
As a whole class groups finalise their brainstorm. This is saved and placed in
students' eportfolios or rpinted out and placed in a print portfolio as well as on
a display board. Both the vocab list and the brainstorm are editable docs ie.
students can add to them as they work through the research. You can demonstrate and
they can do - information collation, indexing, categorising, management on the SB.
You IL skills need to be done in context - ie. when they need it most.

The trouble with embedding technology in curriculum is that we focus too often on
the technology rather than the curriculum and the learning outcomes - hence the
constant browbeating about using Web 2.0 technologies (part of the business model
being pushed at education - get the kids at every opportunity, oh and by the way
use our product too - need to think about why they want us to use it and what do
they get out of the 'free' service). The above scenario can also be done with
sticky notes and butcher's paper or using velcro, cardex and a display board -
sometimes these tools are much more fun because they really cater for your
kinesthetic learners.

We need to think about how we use the technology - it is a delivery mode. It is not
a teaching or learning solution; it will not make boring, chalk and talk lessons
more engaging; it will not solve literacy or engagement issues (computers are not
compensatory but complementary - you need lots of different literacy skills
especially traditional literacy skills to use them).

So look at the smart board through a new lens. It is not a BB/WB - it is an
interactive delivery tool.
Think about why and how you are using it.
:)

Subject: [LM_NET] Smarboard for High School Information Literacy plans

I didn't get much response for my question of lesson plans to use my Smartboard for
high school information literacy plans, searching techiques.
I guess I was looking for some exciting/innovative ways that I haven't already
used. I received lots of requests for hits, but......, I only got one response,
and that is how I currently use my Smartboard. If anyone else has some exciting
ideas, please share and I will post a hit.

I use mine all the time in the middle school, but I create my own lessons. I use my
SB a lot for demonstrating use of databases, modeling information seeking
strategies (e.g., searching with keywords), evaluating websites, creating Works
Cited, etc. Often it is imply a "projector," but it's a lot easier to use than
setting up a projector and screen. (I do not have any wall space or a whiteboard in
my teaching space)
