Lord help me, I have found an incredibly easy and ADDICTIVE program, thanks to a couple of listserv members on LM_NET and TLC. Thanks to all who responded. Attachments of various maps were generously included on many. Please let me know if you'd like me to send you the attachments. I'm assuming it's OK with the senders??! If not, let me know. I am forcing myself, with great difficulty, to put this map project aside for now, in the interest of other priorities, but O...M....G.... It is so easy to use. Someone else recommended Google's Sketch-up, but I couldn't download it without an administrator. "You could use a free online Web 2.0 tool called Gliffy <http://www.gliffy.com ( http://www.gliffy.com/ )>. This tool is great for all kinds of diagrams and there's an option to build floor plans. The basic account is free and limited to 5 diagrams. Once you've built your floor plan, you can export it as an image (.jpg or .png) and duplicate or distribute it as you see fit." Thanks to Marty Rossi, Educational Specialist, Library Services & Media, at ESC20 in San Antonio, and Lynn Slowiak, a librarian from Wisconsin, for directing me to this tool! Other listservers said they use MS Word, Publisher, Powerpoint, or Paint and then use "Shapes." A CAD program was recommended, but I don't need to go to that extent because I'm LOVING me some Gliffy! :-) Directions for MS programs: ************** directions for Powerpoint Start off with a blank slide... You can use the Shapes to demonstrate most shapes you'd use (rectangles/squares, circles/ovals, triangles). In the 2007 version, you can right-click on the shape and select Edit Text to add text without creating an extra text box. You could also create a text box to cover an entire area for "work space" I have a small space, so it fits on one slide. :) I attached my library layout slide (map) for your reference/adaptation. *************** I've done a map activity with 9th graders at several different libraries where they have to go to various locations with their maps and write in the location (which is written on a notecard and taped in a somewhat hidden place). I'm attaching the file to this email, if you'd like to look at it. I just used the Word drawing tools, although you could also use Publisher, I would think. Enjoy! *************** I used Microsoft Word. You can use the clip art and get furniture pieces. I had to play with it a little, but it was super easy after a few minutes. *************** You can create one in kidspiration. I did with the graphic organizer icons. *************** Carol Valdez Librarian Carpenter Middle School carol.valdez@pisd.edu ext. 25027 Confidentiality Notice: This email message, including all attachments, is for the sole use of the intended recipient(s) and may contain confidential student and/or employee information. I know I could draw one and scan it, but I'd love to know how to make it look more professional with a computer program (IMHO) Thanks! Carol <SPAN style="COLOR: #1f497d" ve found solution that works pretty well. had student aide was very computer savvy create my with all furniture in proper place. keep plenty copies of library map and make sure hand a copy to person or group who will be using the library. I dont ask them to put the furniture back in place. Instead, I just tell them that I really appreciate that they will be leaving everything exactly as they found it because I wouldnt have time to take care of it before MY next class. My library is even used for blood drives and elections in addition to all the other groups and gatherings. With the maps, they cant say that theywouldve put everything back, but werent sure how it was to start wit oI thought you would rather put the furniture back so that s the way you want . I think when all of these groups use the library, it can be a good way for me to promote the library without much effort on my part, and when these folks put furniture back in place, hopefully they realize that the library is an important place for my students.
