Thanks to everyone who made suggestions. I now have a great list for my teacher.

In my original request, I asked for read aloud suggestions for a Resource
English/Reading class of 8th and 9th graders.

Here are the suggestions:

Our students in a similar class really REALLY liked the S.E. Hinton books.

One of our Freshmen English teachers reads Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen
aloud to her classes. I know the students really enjoy this one.

We're having great luck with the new "We are the ship" book. WE ARE THE SHIP: THE
STORY OF NEGRO LEAGUE BASEBALL. It's not your usual read-along and the boys in
class really like it. We've had some SS teachers using it for Black History month.

what about Richard Peck's -- A Teacher's Funeral --- it is a riot and
if read aloud the kids would most likely get the humor even better. The Teacher's
Funeral by Richard Peck
Great for read-alouds, especially if you do the different voices.

two really good read alouds for most ages are: MY LOUISANA SKY-by Kimberly Willis
Holt (has a great video, too)and THE FLUNKING OF JOSHUA T.BATES by Susan Shreve. SKY
is the story of an extended family -girl narrator who comes to see that her mother
has serious learning problems and whose grandmother dies. Girl grows up quickly.
Flunking is story of 4th grader who must repeat 3rd grade- no friends in
class-friends all in another grade- will he survive??? If they are more capable as
listners FAREWELL TO MANZANAR and HOUSE ON MANGO STREET are good read-alouds,too.
Try TWILIGHT- its exciting for most ages.

Lawn Boy by Gary Paulsen

I think Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer is great!

Our HS SPED class just read as a class AL Capone does my shirts & loved it.

I think Into the Wild is great!
They also read The Cay as a group.

Depending on their cognitive abilities, "Space Station Seventh Grade" is *very*
funny... however, it might be too funny. There's some sort of bathroom humor - very
seventh grade - that at exactly the wrong age they just won't be able to handle
appropriately. (When I read it with two eighth graders, they were warned that I
hoped they would be mature enough to handle it... )

Another serious one that my middle schoolers liked was "On My Honor" - reasonably
short... we had some discussion along the way in inferences and predictions, so
they were prepared for the hard stuff.
