I usually deal with fairy tales by pointing out that kids can learn about a culture by comparing fairy tales and I'll reinforce this by using the different Cinderella versions. I also talk about the oral tradition to explain how fairy tales traveled around the world. As for art books, I explain that they are "how to" books. I am hoping that someone can help me with this. I have always taught the students (k-5) that the books with Dewey numbers were non-fiction and never have had a problem getting this across to them. Dealing with fairy tales, drawing books, and graphic novels have not been a problem. But the students now cannot seem to deal with them not being "true" books. Can anyone help me get this across to them? Thank you for your help.
