Second-
(These are all examples from my stacks.)

If it smells, weed it.

If it's moldy, weed it.

If it's a biography of a subject that students have never heard of (Brian Bosworth,
70's pop stars, Lawrence Welk) or would feel ridiculous reading about, weed it. (By
the way, there's a difference between a Bio of Lou Gehrig and one of "The Boz" or
"The Fridge.")

If it's a Richard Nixon book that pre-dates Watergate, weed it.

If it's an astronaut book that suggests we will go to the moon--soon! Weed it.

If someone has defaced it, weed it.

If it's got a 50's era, coonskin cap wearing, Davy Crockett-lookin' guy on the
cover and it's more than 10 years old, weed it.

If it discusses Indians, Negroes, Eskimoes, Japs, Nazis or any other
pejorative--weed it.

Anyone else want to add to this list?

Hello LM_NETters -

As a student media specialst teacher (doing my Practicum) in a Middle School
Media Center, I have been asked to weed the 921 (Biographies) section of the
collection that is approximately 40 years old (a rough estimate).
Thus far, I have not had the real world experience of weeding any collection.
What would be some pertinent pointers, important evaluative measures or
thoughts to consider before I begin weeding?
Any input and guidance would greatly be appreciated!

Thank you for supportive suggestions and guidance.
