Harry, I'm with you. As faithful readers of LM_NET know, I've been
weeding a fiction collection that contains books that have not been
checked out since the 1960's. My record so far is one that hasn't gone
out since 1958! While making the sentimentally hard decisions (books &
authors I grew up with and/or studied in library school),I have to remind
myself (and others) that the mission of the school library is to support
the curriculum. All of my weeding decisions have started with an email to
the appropriate department's faculty getting their input. We are not a
repository library and our collections should not ensnarled with
dusty.musty, outdated literature that our students can't find the stuff
they would actually read!

I have probably weeded 1/2 of our fiction collection and was able to get
rid or 2- 12 feet by 7 feet ranges of shelving, allowing me to reopen an
area with ceiling to floor windows and create an area conducive to comfy
chairs, reading and quiet conversation. Once I'm done, I'm planning to
have some sort of Grand Reopening of our fiction section.

"I really didn't realize the librarians were, you know, such a dangerous
group. They are subversive. You think they're just sitting there at the
desk, all quiet and everything. They're like plotting the revolution, man.
I wouldn't mess with them." Michael Moore
