I recently received a grant to purchase books for a special story time program for
the non school age siblings of our students. I am planning to purchase quite a
number of board books, touch and feel books, pop up books, as well as other books
especially for the participants of the program to check out for their children. I
am wondering, however, if I should make these books part of our regular collection
or if I should create a special collection. I am concerned that the novelty of
these books would make them popular with our kindergarteners and then they may not
be available for their intended use. Also I am concerned that the very nature of
those books would result in a lot of book damage and the collection could be
quickly decimated. I am quite aware that there will be damage anyway, but if all
150+ of our kindergarten students are checking them out their lifespan will most
certainly be shortened. The grant does not restrict the use of the books, but they
are especially for this particular program. This grant is also a one time thing so
when these books are gone I will not have funds to replace them. Does anyone have
any suggestions or experience they can share?
