LuAnn,

My pet peeve concerning AR is this. It stifles kids on what they may really want
to read. It also makes kids associate reading with being awarded points or grades
instead of just reading for enjoyment.

On the other hand, if a school has a fairly open AR list this helps immensely.
Then kids have access to as many titles and levels they can handle. It seems that
many schools are locked in so to speak to a set number of titles and therefore
tests. If a child wants to read a book that is not contained in this set then they
are often encouraged to read something that is (stifling). If there is an
exceptional child that tests and reads off the charts for that school what are
their options?

Hope this helps some. They are though just my opinions.

  Hello:

I am a library student that is student teaching in an elementary school. I am
wondering what some good arguments would be to use to convince a district or
principal that Accelerated Reader is not necessarily a program that will have a
positive impact on student learning?

In the event that AR is already in place in a school, what is the way to use it to
its best advantage for students?

Thank you.
